Hello Beautiful people!
This month I want to talk about the importance of Sistership, the importance of valuing your sisters, both blood and your sisters in Christ. This inspiration initially flowed from the recent film Girls Trip. I have no blood sisters but I have many sisters in Christ who I love very much. I have been inspired to encourage as many females as possible to embrace the beauty of Sistership, in order to have a positive impact on their relationship with other females. Sistership is the close relationship of females who share common interests and this type of relationship is definitely one we should invest in, especially with sisters within the faith.
Sisters are there to Support Each Other
Two are Better than One because they have a good reward for their labour. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help him up. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Over the years, I have realised how much I need my sisters. There was a time when I went through an anti-period and felt that I did not need to be close with any females, in fact I embraced my brothers more than them. But over time I realised that as females we really need each other. Not only for the moral, emotional and spiritual support but mainly because many of the things we face have either already been faced by our sisters or will be faced by them in the future.
As females, we don’t realise how similar some of our struggles are and instead of supporting one another many of us are against each other or competing with one other. This should not be so, and this is one of the reasons why I was inspired to write this blog post to get as many females as possible to jump on the bandwagon of supporting and helping one another, as through this we can all be better.
Sisters are there to Love each other
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony (Colossians 3:14). Love is so important in our relationship with our sisters. If you haven’t already, make sure you read the Love Chapter (1 Corinthians 13) or remind yourself of this chapter, which provides us with the perfect definition of love.
Not only should we show each other love by doing nice things for our sisters, and being there when they need us, we also need to be there to correct them in love. Sometimes we may see our sisters doing something wrong and instead of judging or criticizing them, we should correct them by speaking the truth in love. On the other hand, whenever we are corrected by our sisters we should also be ready to receive their correction in love. Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8)!
Sisters are there to Forgive Each Other
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17).
Our sisters are very likely to offend us and we are also likely to offend them. But, once we understand the importance of Sistership, we will choose to forgive each other. Forgiveness is key amongst sisters as unforgiveness usually prevents women from building each other up. When sisters are against each other, it is very hard for them to work together effectively for a greater purpose. If forgiveness is something that you are struggling with then feel free to read my previous blog post on Forgiveness.
What Does Sistership mean to you?
So, I thought that it would be really nice to get some of the opinions of a few females in my life; both friends and sisters in Christ on what sistership means to them:
- Wande F – I have one sister but I really appreciate the importance of sisterhood. I have three close friends who are as close as sisters and who have helped me make important decisions in my life.
- Rachel A – A sister is someone that I can trust and confide in, someone who will support me and push me to do better things. Sisterhood is when females love each other like sisters even if they are not blood.
- Wande S – Love is the main foundation for Sistership. Sistership means having likeminded people who you can confide in, who will uplift you and who can pray for you.
- Temi T – Sistership means having sisters who are God sent who support and encourage you regularly. This has also taught me how to love my blood sisters.
- Karan D – I have close family friends who are females, but I consider family bonds more important. Family comes first and no one can be as close to me as my sister.
I have sisters that I am accountable to and who are accountable to me in different areas. If I’m feeling weak I can always rely on some of my sisters to lift me up with prayer and vice versa. I believe that Sistership is necessary and we all need to have a few sisters in our life! We all need people and cannot go through this life alone. So what does Sistership mean to me? It means Sisters who encourage each other to keep going when one of them feels like giving up.
Final Word of Encouragement…
Sisters, above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Your sisters will probably offend you, but forgive them, love them, pray for them and support them and you never know whose life you may impact through this action. Also, remember that some sisters may be in your life only for a season, but you can still have a positive impact on their lives during that season. I hope that someone was blessed by this post! Please make sure that you share this post with as many sisters as possible as Together we can be Better. Let us encourage as many females to embrace the Importance of Sistership, whilst we continue to encourage each other to Do Better Everyday.
