Hello to all of my amazing readers and any new readers! I wanted to begin this post by saying Happy New year but as we are now nearly at the end of January, I didn’t think it would still be appropriate. But as it is my first post of the year, let me just say welcome to the new year and I hope that you are all encouraged and ready to smash your goals for this year, by God’s Grace. Like many of you, towards the end of last year I wrote down some goals detailing the things I want to achieve and work on this year. Last year, my word for the year was ‘productivity‘ and throughout the year I made a conscious effort to stay productive and not just busy. This year my key word is ‘discipline’.
How did I choose my key word for the year?
To be honest, I never really sat down to plan or ‘decide’ what my word for the year would be, but it is something that was laid on my heart towards the end of the year. I realised that discipline was something that I struggled with, not only in one area but in many areas, which I began to see the effects of. So, I have now decided to work on becoming more disciplined this year, through the help of God, and I have decided to take you guys along with me on this journey.
Now, I started the year thinking, ‘yes, this year I’m going to be disciplined in all areas and because I have set my mind to it, it is going to be easy‘.
So we are now coming towards the end of January and I have already failed in staying disciplined quite a few times. To take an example, one of my goals for the new year was to cut down the consumption of sweets and chocolate. Now, the first day back to work it was like everyone decided that they wanted to bring treats to ‘celebrate the new year’. Now I am not going to lie to you guys but the temptation was real, and I gave in, eating more chocolates than I usually would. But, I am not going to let that stop me from still trying to be disciplined and trying to do better. After all, that is what do better everyday is all about; not giving up or letting one mistake stop you from moving forward. One thing that I have noticed in life is that when you decide to do something, you best believe that you are going to get tested in that area. I know that it will probably not be as easy as I thought, but I know that it will definitely be worth it.
What is discipline?
So we hear the word all the time, but some of us may not actually know what it means. In fact some of us may even see it as punishment. Discipline is one thing that we do not like talking about. Why? Because it can be painful, it requires effort and to be honest sometimes it is long. But it must be spoken about, not only for the benefit of our physical lives but also for our spiritual lives.
Discipline is pretty much training or you can say, cultivating a habit. If you want to lose weight, you will train your body and work out in order to see positive results, even though this may require some pain, but just as an athlete experiences joy when crossing the finish line, forgetting the pain of the past, this is the same result for someone who lives a disciplined life. Living a disciplined life doesn’t sound fun but it is definitely worth it, and you will be able to testify to that once you start to see the benefits.
It’s pretty much delayed gratification!
Discipline requires for you to say no to immediate pleasure for a longer term goal or result. Let us use our mental health as an example. We all know that resting allows you to be more productive. Now throughout 2018 rest was almost non-existent for me. I just kept ‘doing’. Although I was productive, I just didn’t know how to rest which led to stress and eventually slowed me down at times. Sometimes we choose not to be disciplined because it feels good at the time, but most times than not we are likely to regret our decision at a later date.
Discipline requires planning!
Discipline does not just happen. It requires putting in work which includes planning. Let’s say for example one of your goals for this year is to buy a house, a new car or maybe just save a certain amount by the end of the year; this will not happen by you simply wishing. It probably won’t even happen with you writing it down and saying you are working towards it if you have not made a plan of how you are going to achieve that goal. That is where discipline comes in. It may require you to start taking food from home rather than buying lunch everyday, or to say no to certain things. But the more disciplined you are with your finances, the more likely you will do better financially!
💫Final word of encouragement…
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want another year to go without achieving the goals I believe God has laid on my heart. As I have now realised that I can only achieve this if I am disciplined; disciplined with my time, my body, my mind, the food I eat, ensuring I get enough sleep etc… I am determined to become more disciplined. One thing that I definitely still need to work on is my time management, but I will keep you guys updated on this in a future blog post.
What do you need to be more disciplined in? Take some time to reflect on this and start to make the necessary changes. Remember, you cannot keep doing the same thing and expect to get the same result.
